So recently there was a debate on Twitter between rapper BOB and Neil deGrasse Tyson over whether or not the Earth is flat. No, seriously, this actually happened. But it raises a somewhat interesting point about where people get their wacky ideas and then present them as fact. I give you the following from Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds:
We find that whole communities suddenly fix their minds upon one object, and go mad in its pursuit; that millions of people become simultaneously impressed with one delusion, and run after it, till their attention is caught by some new folly more captivating than the first.
This can be true of any closely held community or individual belief, when people can become set in their ways or attitudes about, well, any subject. People can be rational as individuals, or in some cases, not so much. But the world exists as it is, not as we want to see it. That’s what makes some people so blind.
